Commercial generative AI tools have become increasingly popular in a research context, leaving many unsure about how to use them appropriately. Should you list generative AI tools as authors in a paper? How should you disclose your use of them? Can you use figures generated by these tools?
To help answer questions like these, the Research Compliance Office (RCO) has developed guidelines on the use of these tools in a research setting, including guidelines for processing research data, reporting research outputs, and peer review.
The IT Division has also developed Guidance on using Generative AI tools, addressing key AI issues that often come up, such as the security of sensitive information and how to avoid infringing on external parties’ copyrights and other intellectual property.
Finally, UC Berkeley has also developed policies, advisories, and guidelines for the use of AI.
