Dear friends and colleagues,
We’ve received notice from the DOE that Jim Siegrist will retire from his position as the DOE Office of Science Associate Director for High Energy Physics effective March 31. Dr. Harriet Kung, the Deputy Director for Science Programs, will be Acting Associate Director for HEP while DOE conducts a search for his successor.
Jim served as the DOE HEP AD for over a decade, shepherding the field through the very successful P5 “Building for Discovery” report in 2014 and the subsequent approval of several major new projects including the DESI, LZ and CMB-S4 experiments led by LBNL as well as the LHC accelerator and detector upgrades, the LBNF/DUNE project and a major new program in Quantum Information Science. Prior to his service at DOE, Jim was the LBNL Physics Division Director for 15 years, the LBNL Associate Lab Director for General Sciences for 12 years, and a faculty member in the UC Berkeley Physics Department since 1988.
We congratulate Jim on his long and successful leadership role at DOE, and wish him all the best in retirement. The official communication from Steve Binkley, the Director of the DOE Office of Science is included below.
Best wishes,
Natalie Roe
