The Research Projects Committee (RPC) acts under the authority of the Laboratory Director and is charged with independently assessing non-standard requirements for research conducted at Berkeley Lab.
Berkeley Lab is committed to open, fundamental research and its mission to bring science solutions to the world. However, circumstances may warrant reasonable exceptions that may impose limited conditions or obligations on the execution or publication of our research. Those exceptions may arise from work with other government agencies or collaboration with industry where this would benefit the Department of Energy (DOE) and United States interests more broadly.
The committee makes recommendations to the Laboratory Director and Deputy Director for Research whether suggested contract clauses for research performed at Berkeley Lab are feasible, reasonable, and justified in the context of DOE and U.S. interests. The RPC’s independent assessment of proposed projects promotes a consistent and uniform set of guidelines across the Lab.
The Committee consists of researchers from different research areas across the Laboratory. The committee is chaired by the Research Compliance Officer. Delegates from other Laboratory offices, including Office of Laboratory Counsel (OLC), Information Technology (IT), Intellectual Property Office (IPO), Office of National and Homeland Security (ONHS), Research Compliance Office (RCO), and the Strategic Partnerships Office (SPO) attend RPC meetings in an advisory capacity.
