Welcome to the first issue of Research News, an occasional update for the Lab’s research community. Research News is designed to provide insights and tools to make you more effective as you manage your research and your research career.
I know you’re busy doing science and the myriad activities required to support your research, so this newsletter will be distributed only when there are critical news and information that’s pertinent to you as a researcher at Berkeley Lab.
The Office of the Deputy Lab Director for Research (ODLDR) is supporting a large number of activities that can help you be more effective in your research, as well as to assure research compliance. Not everyone in the Lab’s research community knows about these topics, so I’d like to use this newsletter – and some new web pages – to help raise awareness. I will communicate on funding opportunities, including LDRD, career development, research integrity, research management tools, mentorship, and changes at the Lab that impact the way you work.
Please feel free to share feedback on the information in the newsletter, and tell us what else you need to know to move your research forward at researchnews@lbl.gov.
Thank you, and continued success for your research projects,
Horst D. Simon
Deputy Laboratory Director for Research
Chief Research Officer
New Website Includes Lab’s Strategic Plans
To achieve the greatest scientific impact with the people, assets, and facilities entrusted to us, it is important that everyone at the Lab understands how their own work supports the Lab’s strategy. At this new website, you will find the planning documents that outline the Lab’s strategy, including the Annual Lab Plan, or ALP, the core of our strategic planning efforts.

Use Pivot to Find, Manage Funding Opportunities
Pivot, an online research service and database used by thousands of research institutions, provides a single, comprehensive resource for federal, state, and foundation funding opportunities. The Lab covers the annual subscription fee, so it is a free service at the Lab.

Career Pathways Office to Support Career Development
To address the need for career development and clarity about career paths and processes in our scientific areas, a new office has been created, the Career Pathways office, in the Lab Directorate. Initially, the existing Postdoc Scholars Program and Early Career Enrichment Program will be brought together into the Pathways office. In later phases, the office will support scientist and engineer hires, promotions, and faculty appointments and may provide onboarding and professional development assistance. The office reports to Bill Johansen in Horst Simon’s office. The staff contact for Pathways is Meg Rodriguez, who has been managing the Lab’s postdoc program.
