Do you wish there was a convenient place you could look for funding opportunities relevant to your research? If you aren’t already using Pivot’s research funding tool, check it out. The service, free to Lab researchers, provides a resource for many federal, state, and foundation funding opportunities.
Researchers can set up notifications of new opportunities based on customized profiles or with automated searches. Pivot can also help identify additional collaborators from across the Lab who might make proposals stronger.
Some current funding opportunities to be aware of:
- Do you have an exciting, transformational technology that could rapidly remake the U.S. energy landscape? The Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) OPEN 2021 funding opportunity supports high-risk R&D leading to the development of potentially disruptive new technologies across the full spectrum of energy applications. The total amount to be awarded in OPEN 2021 is approximately $100 million (subject to the availability of appropriated funds); OPEN encourages proposals of $250K to $10M for new and emerging areas. The Strategic Partnerships Office (SPO) has set up an informational website with a registration form link and is requesting all PIs and teams interested in submitting concept papers to complete the form by March 23. This will allow the Lab to forecast and plan full proposal development resources accordingly. For additional guidance, view this recent communique.
- Currently there are six active funding opportunities with the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), across six DOE technical offices (Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office, Solar Energy Technologies Office, Bioenergy Technologies Office, Vehicle Technologies Office, Wind Energy Technologies Office, and Building Technologies Office), for a total available amount of funding of $246.7 million. For the most up to date information check the EERE exchange.
- For Office of National & Homeland Security (ONHS) sponsors (i.e., DOE NNSA, DoD, DHS, and the intelligence community), Pivot does not include all relevant funding opportunities; it does capture Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) opportunities, many of which are relevant to Lab researchers and fund high-risk, high-reward cutting-edge research. Other key ONHS funding opportunities are summarized on the ONHS Opportunities web page. You can also contact onhs@lbl.gov to explore other potential opportunities.
